Earlier this Saturday, NFL Network reported that Matt Corral was released by the Patriots. A few hours later, it was revealed that he was actually placed on the exempt/left squad list.
Moments ago, we received some information regarding this bizarre situation in New England.
According to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, Corral left the Patriots without notice. That’s why he received a non-injury related tag on the final injury report for Week 1.
Of course, Corral’s absence would also explain why he ended up on the exempt/left squad list.

The Patriots claimed Corral off waivers on Aug. 31. The belief was that he’d compete with Bailey Zappe for the backup quarterback job.
Well, it didn’t take long for that situation to sort itself out. Zappe has been promoted to the 53-man roster for the Patriots’ season opener.
As for Corral, his future with the Patriots has to be up in the air at this very moment. The former third-round pick from Ole Miss has potential, but he just hasn’t found his footing.
