Mike Vrabel explains thought process behind Patriots’ coaching staff

The Patriots’ new head coach explained his thoughts behind the staff he assembled.

The New England Patriots have finalized their coaching staff for the 2025 season, announcing the full group on Wednesday. In total, it will be 27 coaches strong and include a mix of veterans of the profession, holdovers from last year, and young up-and-comers.

For Mike Vrabel, who was hired as head coach last month, there is one common thread with the diverse group he has assembled.

“The goal in filling out the 2025 Patriots coaching staff was to identify loyal, trustworthy coaches who are diverse in background, ideas, experiences and systems,” he explained in a statement released by the team.

Vrabel placing a high value on loyalty and trustworthiness is no surprise, and something his first reported hires already made clear. He regularly tapped into existing connections, mostly from his time as head coach of the Tennessee Titans between 2018 and 2023, and his one-year stint with the Cleveland Browns in 2024.

As a consequence, 14 of the 26 coaches he hired have crossed paths with him before — either because they worked alongside him in Tennessee and Cleveland, or because they connected during his playing days. Regardless of existing ties, Vrabel is confident that his staff will be able to build a strong foundation at One Patriot Place.

“We will be aligned in our vision to teach and develop our players with creativity, consistency and an attention to detail with the major goal of developing relationships that stretch beyond the field and meeting rooms,” he said.

“We are going to build a program that players, coaches and staff want to be a part of, protect and be proud of. There are so many great people in this building who help our players and the coaching staff on a daily basis. I am excited to work side by side with them to build this program.”
