The 31-year-old first joined the staff as an intern in 2015.

The secondary is set to change hands in Foxborough.

In addition to safeties coach Brian Belichick’s departure, Mike Pellegrino will also not be returning to the New England Patriots in 2025, as first reported Tuesday by ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Pellegrino, 31, spent the past six seasons as the organization’s cornerbacks coach. His time in that role began with veteran starter Stephon Gilmore earning AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2019. The run continued with All-Pro selections for past undrafted free agent J.C. Jackson in 2021 and present NFL Comeback Player of the Year finalist Christian Gonzalez in 2024.

Under Pellegrino’s watch, New England’s defense ranked No. 2, No. 6, No. 2, No. 18, No. 10 and No. 6 around the league in total passing yards allowed per campaign. The former East-West Shrine Bowl co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach had been retained last offseason following Bill Belichick’s firing and Jerod Mayo’s hiring. But the 4-13 record remained.

Pellegrino, a Johns Hopkins All-American and Major League Lacrosse draft choice, first arrived at Gillette Stadium as a football operations intern in 2015. Super Bowl LI and LIII rings followed.

He went on to serve as a coaching assistant through 2018 before succeeding Josh Boyer as cornerbacks coach — a title only they have held for the team over the past 13 seasons.

The Patriots announced Terrell Williams as defensive coordinator last week as part of new head coach Mike Vrabel’s overhauled staff.
