Matt Damon Reveals Who He’s Rooting For In Bucs vs. Patriots

July 27, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

During his time with the New England Patriots, Tom Brady brought the franchise to unparalleled heights and established a nearly two-decade long dynasty. He won six Super Bowls alongside legendary head coach Bill Belichick and carved out a legacy as the most successful quarterback in NFL history.

The break-up between Brady and the Patriots wasn’t pretty, but the six-time champ quickly landed back on his feet with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At the age of 43, he won a seventh Super Bowl with his new team, only further separating himself from the rest of the league’s quarterbacks.

Brady will be back in Tampa in 2021 and will try his best to bring the Buccaneers consecutive titles. At least one of his loyal supporters, and friends, will be pulling for him to do so.

Massachusetts native and noted Boston-area sports fan Matt Damon will have Brady’s back yet again during the 2021 season. In a Tuesday interview with Dan Patrick, the actor shared that he’d even root for the quarterback if the Buccaneers met the Patriots in Super LVI.

Damon then ended the conversation with Patrick by saying “Go Bucs.”

Damon’s declarative support for Brady isn’t entirely stunning given that the two have somewhat of a relationship. However, it’s pretty shocking to see the rabid Boston sports fan turn his back on the Patriots.

Given New England’s disappointing showing 2020, Damon may be wise to lean into the Buccaneers again this season. The Patriots should improve with their revamped roster, but will be hard-pressed to make the Super Bowl next February.

Although Tampa Bay and New England likely won’t meet in the title game, the two teams will square off in the regular season. The Buccaneers will travel to Gillette Stadium in Week 4 to play the Patriots in a cross-conference match-up.

Damon will surely be watching when Brady’s Bucs play his hometown franchise on Oct. 3. Based on his comments on Monday, it sounds like he’ll be pulling for Tampa Bay’s quarterback when the two teams meet.
