The New England Patriots have a plan when it comes to inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo.
Back in January, the team issued a statement saying that they had “begun negotiations for a contract extension” for him. Some pundits also thought he would be getting a new gig, such as being an assistant or associate coach to Bill Belichick.
According to Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, Mayo is only expected to get a pay raise, not a new job title.
“Regarding Jerod Mayo, I’m hearing from a source we should pump the brakes on him having a new title going forward. A pay raise for sure, and his overall role could change, but there might not be a different title,” Guregian tweeted.
The pay raise makes sense since Mayo declined numerous interview opportunities with other teams after the Patriots’ season came to an end.
Still, some fans are upset that he’s likely not becoming an assistant coach despite the job he has done.
“What?! No Assistant HC?” one fan asked.
“Interesting. Personally, I think it’s a joke if the Patriots don’t give Mayo a new title. He’s more than earned the right to be the Defensive Coordinator. If Bill doesn’t want to give him that because of Steve, then give him the Associate Head Coach title,” another fan tweeted.
It remains to be seen what the Patriots announce for Mayo.
