The New England Patriots did not want to pay Jakobi Meyers, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t going to sign another wide receiver.
New England agreed to terms on a three-year, $33 million contract with free agent wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster on Wednesday. Smith-Schuster will reportedly receive $22.5 million guaranteed over the first two years of the deal.
Those numbers are right in line with what Meyers, who played for the Patriots from 2019-22, received from the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this week. The only difference is Meyers got slightly less guaranteed money–a reported $21 million.
The former New England undrafted free agent seems to be unhappy that his old team didn’t want to give him what they gave Smith-Schuster.
“Cold world lol,” Meyers tweeted in response to news about JuJu’s contract.
Meyers became a reliable target for New England quarterbacks, including Tom Brady, Cam Newton and Mac Jones, over his four seasons in Foxboro.
In 60 games, the former NC State star caught 235 passes for 2,758 yards and eight touchdowns.
