Cam Newton‘s time with the New England Patriots, just the second team he’s played for during his NFL career, has come to a close. The Pats made the pretty surprising decision to release the former MVP this afternoon as part of their roster cuts.
With the decision, 2021 first-round pick Mac Jones will be the team’s starter. Jones was right there with Newton, if not ahead of him, during training camp and the preseason. Throw in the financial benefits of moving on from Newton, and questions surrounding his vaccination status, and the Patriots decision became a bit more understandable.
Late this morning, Newton took to social media to respond to the news, in extremely Cam Newton fashion. Using his…we’ll call it personal style… he made things clear: he doesn’t want anyone feeling sorry for him today.
“I really appreciate all the love and support during this time but I must say… please don’t feel sorry for me!! #imgood” Newton wrote.

Cam Newton was extremely up-and-down as the team’s starter last year, his first season in New England. He led the Pats to a 7-8 record in 15 games, completing a solid 65.8-percent of his throws, but only accounting for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
He was effective as a rusher, going for 592 yards and 12 scores on the ground. The Patriots also didn’t have a particularly loaded passing offense in general, so there was some expectation that he could take a step forward this year, with a better receiving corps. Instead, the Mac Jones era will begin before many anticipated.
Jones will take on his former Alabama teammate Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. Newton, meanwhile, will see how the quarterback situations around the league play out. He almost definitely wants to step in and start, and if history repeats, there’ll be some teams in need of a veteran quarterback down the road.
