Head coach openings are beginning to pop up across the league, and UNC’s Bill Belichick reportedly could draw some interest for the available positions. Widely considered to be among the game’s greatest minds, the eight-time Super Bowl champion dominated the league for two decades with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, winning six Super Bowls while setting countless records.
While the 2020s have not been kind to the legendary head coach, a recent report indicates he could earn another opportunity at the professional level. According to a new report from Josina Anderson, “at least” two teams are monitoring Belichick’s status and could try to bring him back to the NFL.
REPORT: Bill Belichick Could Make NFL Return Next Year
For what it’s worth, Bill Belichick previously released a statement saying he has no intention of returning to the NFL world. After the New York Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll, Belichick said his “commitment to the UNC football program has not wavered” and that he “will not pursue any NFL head coaching vacancies.” Time will tell if these statements are true, but for the time being, we should assume he’ll stay in Chapel Hill.
This report also comes as a surprise, seeing as the NFL is a “what have you done for me lately” league, and Bill Belichick hasn’t looked the same in recent years. Nobody denies that, at his best, he was arguably the greatest coach in the league. However, time comes for us all, and Belichick appears to have lost his fastball in recent seasons. He failed to rebuild the New England Patriots in the post-Brady Era, drew no NFL interest after parting ways with the team after 2023, and hasn’t exactly saved the UNC program.
Bill Belichick will be 73 years old in the 2025 season, and it’s hard to imagine any organization placing their faith in an aging coach, even one with his resume. The Las Vegas Raiders are the only team to do something like this in recent memory, and they’re currently 2-9 with 74-year-old Pete Carroll calling the shots.
