Julian Edelman Reacts To Patriots’ Quarterback Decision

September 1, 2021 by The Spun

Julian Edelman of the New England Patriots looks on.

Earlier this week, the New England Patriots finally made a decision between former NFL MVP quarterback Cam Newton and rookie quarterback Mac Jones.

Head coach Bill Belichick announced the team released Newton, paving the way Jones to be the starting quarterback. The No. 15 overall pick clearly did enough to impress Belichick and win the starting job.

The move to anoint Jones and release Newton caught the NFL world by surprise. However, former Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman knows better.

“Nothing surprises me with Bill. Just look at the history,” Edelman said via NBC Sports. “Logan Mankins was let go. Lawyer Milloy, [Richard] Seymour.”

Here’s more of what Edelman had to say:

“I think the kid came out and did very well. You could see in his eyes, see in his reads, that he felt very comfortable in the pocket.  He was looking at the right areas. He ran the no-huddle well.”

While Edelman knows Jones played well, he doesn’t think the No. 15 overall pick “beat out” Newton for the starting job.

“I don’t think he beat [Newton] out, but the ceiling is so high and after spending the 15th overall pick on him, they’re going to go with him. It didn’t surprise me.”

Jones’ first start for the Patriots will come against former Alabama teammate Tua Tagovailoa. The Patriots and Miami Dolphins square off on September 12.
