The New England Patriots have rattled off five straight wins, due in large part to the play of their rookie quarterback, Mac Jones. The No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 draft has been masterful during the organization’s current win streak and now has the team poised to make in the playoffs in his first year under center.
Jones has already lived up to the expectations that come with being a first-round pick and then some, but he’s still yet to show one former Patriot that he has everything he needs to be successful long-term in the NFL.
In a recent appearance on Pardon My Take, former wide receiver Julian Edelman spoke very highly of Jones. However, he explained why he still wants to the Patriots rookie quarterback show a little more toughness even when the team is struggling.
“You wanna see the toughness of a guy,” Edelman said on the podcast. “We’re seeing how he can take in the offense and he can be an efficient quarterback. There’s gonna be times where it’s not always sunny. They’re going on a four-game winning streak … I wanna see him, that last bit to see if he’s their guy — and he’s their guy — but I wanna see something go wrong. And I wanna see the man he is in an adverse situation.
“Like, that’s when you see your best leaders. That’s when the Tom Bradys … when he goes out, in any situation when we were down a certain amount of points, you saw a laser focus in his eyes. And I wanna see it (from Jones). Everything looks great right now. He looks like a really good quarterback. He’s taking in the offense. He plays on time.”

Jones hasn’t had to fight through diversity these last few weeks as the Patriots have rattled off the longest current win streak in the NFL. At 7-4, New England took the lead in the AFC East this past weekend after shutting out the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday Night Football.
Jones has been remarkably efficient during the Patriots win streak and done a strong job at protecting the football. If he can keep doing both of those things, and maybe develop some additional toughness, New England should be in good shape for the rest of the year.
