Dobbs signed a two-year deal this offseason to backup Maye.
Among the coaches and players from the New England Patriots’ quarterback room last season, only Drake Maye remains entering the 2025 season.
Maye is now set to be backed up by Joshua Dobbs, who he first met at a NFLPA golf event in Cancun, Mexico earlier this offseason. With the two in Foxboro for the Patriots voluntary offseason program, Maye has taken it upon his shoulders to show the 30-year old around.
“He can hit the crap out of it with his driver,” Dobbs said Tuesday. “It’s good to get a chance to meet each other outside of the football environment and put a face with a name, and start talking ball and get to know each other. And, just being in the building, the kid loves football. It’s really good to be around that every morning, coming in [he’s] high spirit.”
As Maye has helped Dobbs settle into the New England region on and off the field, the veteran QB is ready to help the 22-year old whenever he needs it.
Dobbs has experience in many quarterback rooms as he’s taken stops with eight different organizations over his eight-year career. That included working with Maye’s previous backup, Jacoby Brissett, who helped teach him the importance of being in a healthy quarterback room.
“One of my faves and a familiar face up here is Jacoby. He’s had two stints here. And for me, I got a chance to spend time with him in Cleveland. And at that point, he had played much more football than I had played,” Dobbs shared. “I really hadn’t played much football from a starting capacity and to be able to learn from him, like see how you approach every single week, reps in the offseason, how he engaged with his teammates, it was a really good, healthy quarterback group.
“That’s why I’ve enjoyed at the stops that I feel have been the most productive for me is a healthy quarterback room. Whoever the guy is out there on Sunday, it’s everyone’s job in that room to make sure they’re supported and ready to go, and ready to play. And obviously, from my role, it’s ensuring that as we’re in the offense together, Drake feels comfortable and can go out there and play at a high level… We want to have a healthy quarterback room obviously competitive — push each other every single day. But whoever’s out there, we want them to go out and play the best ball they can.”
In order to do that, Dobbs hopes the two are pulling the rope in the same direction on a daily basis to become the best quarterbacks they can. That has started in recent weeks with the duo learning Josh McDaniels’ new offense.
While Dobbs has never played in the system during his career, he believes he can still provide support to Maye when he needs it.
“I’m able to provide pointers from things I’ve seen in the past, how to quickly pick up an offense, and go out and execute it,” Dobbs said. “He’s done a great job of showing me around the team and guys that have been around the last year. It’s been a great dynamic, and we’re going to enjoy working together.”
