The Patriots are adding to their interior offensive line.
One day after releasing longtime starting center David Andrews, the New England Patriots have added another experienced player to their offensive line. Wes Schweitzer, who most recently played for the New York Jets, is joining on a one-year free agency deal.
Let’s grade the signing.
Instant grade: Patriots sign Wes Schweitzer to 1-year deal
Bernd Buchmasser: The Patriots needed more experienced depth along the interior offensive line with David Andrews out, and Schweitzer provides just that. Whether or not he will offer anything more at this stage in his career (or if the team even expects him to) remains to be seen. Still, a solid low-cost add. | Grade: C
Matt St. Jean: Schweitzer is a professional lineman with experience at all three spots on the interior and a positive relationship with Todd Downing. He should raise the floor for New England’s offensive line at either LG or C in 2025. | Grade: C+
Pat Lane: Offensive line depth is important, obviously, but Schweitzer has only started 13 games in the past four years combined. He does have position flexibility, as he’s played center and both guard spots, but the Patriots offensive line isn’t much better than it was yesterday. | Grade: D
With Schweitzer on board, the Patriots’ interior offensive line is back up to eight players. Besides him, the team is also rostering Layden Robinson, Cole Strange, Michael Onwenu, Ben Brown, Jake Andrews, Lecitus Smith and Tyrese Robinson. Tackle/guard hybrid Sidy Sow is also potentially part of the mix.
