Free agency performance leaving Patriots fans optimistic about future

April 17, 2025 by Pats Pulpit

Indianapolis Colts v New England Patriots

The Patriots get high marks for their free agent approach.

Earlier this week, we asked fans how to graded New England’s 2025 free agency period with the significant moves already made. This included the additions of players like Milton Williams, Stefon Diggs, Morgan Moses, and Harold Landry, and the departures of captains Ja’Whaun Bentley and David Andrews.

Sixty-two percent of respondents gave the Patriots a “B” grade, indicating Patriots fans are pleased with the team’s approach but not fully satisfied. Another thirty percent gave the team an “A”, suggesting a significant portion of the fan base is very satisfied with how Mike Vrabel’s group attacked the veteran market.

Just eight percent of voters gave the team a “C” or lower—seven for a “C”, one for a “D”. Less than one percent the Patriots a failing grade.

It is clear fans see the franchise as one that is ascending based on the moves made in free agency. But how many wins does that translate to?

The over/under for New England’s win total in 2025 is projected to be 7.5 at the moment, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. A whopping eighty percent of Patriots fans expect them to exceed that number.

The Patriots have not surpassed seven wins since 2022, the sophomore season for Mac Jones. New England won eight games that season, losing a finale in Buffalo that would have given the team a winning record and playoff berth.

Twenty percent expected the Patriots to fall short of eight wins. If they are correct, it would mark a third consecutive losing season for the franchise. That would be the longest streak since a five-season stretch from 1989 to 1993 in which the team won just 19 games and never won more than six in a season.
