The playing surface for this year’s Super Bowl was so poor that players on the Chiefs and Eagles kept slipping over the course of the game.
During an appearance on Chris Long’s podcast, former Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola said the field conditions in Arizona have always been somewhat of an issue, especially at night.
“When you play a night game in AZ, for some reason the grass always gets a little dewy at night, and it’s so slick,” Amendola told Long. “I’ve worn seven studs on that field numerous times.”
Amendola revealed that Bill Belichick made it mandatory for players to wear seven-stud cleats when they played in Arizona.
“Bill made it a mandatory seven-stud game,” Amendola said. “We were all b—-ing and moaning, but we didn’t have too many slips.”
Players don’t love wearing seven-stud cleats because they’re heavier than normal ones.
At the end of the day though, the Patriots benefitted from Belichick going the extra mile to make sure his players properly handled Arizona’s field.
