Drake Maye Could Become the Fifth Second-Year QB Ever to Win a Super Bowl

December 30, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Will Drake Maye win a Super Bowl this season? If so, he’ll become just the fifth second-year quarterback in NFL history to accomplish the feat.

Maye is one of the top MVP candidates this year. The New England Patriots star leads the NFL in completion percentage (71.7) and passer rating (112.9). He has also thrown for 4,203 yards (fourth in the league) and touchdowns (tied for third).

More importantly, Maye has powered the Patriots to a 13-3 record, and the team has clinched the AFC East. It remains to be seen, though, whether Maye and Co. can win it all.

NFL Quarterbacks Who’ve Won a Ring in Their Second Year

Only four second-year quarterbacks have ever won the Super Bowl: Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, and Russell Wilson. You would think Patrick Mahomes would be on the list, but he won his first ring in Year 3.

Warner had a storybook career. The former Northern Iowa star went undrafted and bagged groceries. But after playing in the Arena Football League and NFL Europe, Warner ultimately led the St. Louis (now Los Angeles) Rams to a Super Bowl XXXIV victory.

Warner was named MVP of the game after passing for 414 yards and two touchdowns in the 23-16 win over the Tennessee Titans.

Two years later, Brady led the Patriots to a victory in Super Bowl XXXVI. New England defeated Warner’s Rams 20-17. Adam Vinatieri kicked the game-winning 48-yard field goal, but Brady was named Super Bowl MVP. Brady completed 16 of 27 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown. It was the first of seven Super Bowls that he won during his illustrious career.

Meanwhile, Roethlisberger had a stellar start to his career. After winning Rookie of the Year honors, he picked up a ring during his sophomore season. Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 in Super Bowl XL.

Roethlisberger completed only nine of his 21 passing attempts for 121 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions. Steelers receiver Hines Ward earned the MVP award for his five catches, 123 receiving yards, and a touchdown.

Years later in Super Bowl XLVIII, Wilson and the Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom” defense beat the Denver Broncos 43-8. Wilson threw for 206 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Yet, Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith, who had a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown, was named the game’s MVP.

Will Drake Maye Pull It Off?

Drake Maye has put together an unbelievable 2025 season. In Week 17 against the New York Jets, the North Carolina product was nearly perfect. Maye completed over 90 percent of his passes, and threw for 256 yards and five touchdowns in the 42-10 win. In doing so, Maye became the first player in NFL history to complete over 90 percent of his passes while throwing for at least 250 yards and five touchdowns in a game.

It was also the seventh time this season in which Maye has completed at least 75 percent of his passes while throwing for at least 200 yards and two touchdowns. Brady is the only quarterback in history with more such games in a season.

Nobody’s predicting Drake Maye to be the next Tom Brady. However, he could certainly win a ring in his second season like Brady did. But, of course, it will be a difficult task for Maye and the Patriots.
