Drake Maye Chooses ‘Best Thing’ From First Patriots Start

October 15, 2024 by NESN

Drake Maye knows there’s room to grow from his starting debut with the New England Patriots in a 41-21 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday.

The rookie tossed three touchdown passes while turning the ball over three times. Bouncing back from those plays helped shape his first start in the NFL and marked his proudest development.

“The best thing I did was handle some adversity,” Maye told WEEI on Monday. “Coming out on that second drive with Pop (DeMario Douglas) over the middle and missed him over the middle. It was something I beat myself up about on the sideline. Feel like I need to make those throws. … Other than that, handle some adversity. Put together a scoring drive at the end of the half. Kind of coming out with some juice at the start of the second half.”

Moving forward, the Patriots rookie wants to improve his ability to help the offensive line with quicker, decisive decisions with the ball in his hands.

“Getting the ball out and realizing sometimes an incompletion is the best place,” Maye added.

Maye and the Patriots head to London seeking the rookie’s first win in Week 7 against old friend and backup quarterback Mac Jones and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
