Cowboys Extension Candidate Could Seek Trade Following Latest Move

May 17, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Tyler Smith Agent

Dallas Cowboys star offensive lineman Tyler Smith is eligible for a contract extension, and the former first-round pick recently hired a new agent ahead of his projected payday. Earning a starting job as a rookie, Smith has been one of the league’s better guards in his three years, finishing with a 73.3 or above PFF grade in every season. While Smith isn’t an elite option at the position, he’s a young, talented player with a bright future in this league who should earn a massive raise with his next deal.

Athletes First recently announced Tyler Smith as a client, and the agent change suggests he wants to begin extension talks. Unfortunately for Smith, it’s hard to envision a world where the Dallas Cowboys prioritize him. Owner Jerry Jones has dragged his feet with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb’s extensions, and the unsigned Micah Parsons is (rightfully) their top priority at the moment. Smith could be the odd-man out, but several teams across the league could be willing to trade for the offensive lineman and give him the contract he deserves.

Cowboys’ Tyler Smith Hires New Agent, Could Seek Extension or Trade

Possible Fits

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens have two reliable tackles and one of the best centers in the game, but they need better guards. Andrew Vorhees and Daniel Faalele are both unremarkable starters who are better off in a depth role, and Tyler Smith could immediately upgrade this unit. Giving Baltimore a top-five offensive line to clear lanes for Derrick Henry and protect Lamar Jackson could be exactly what this team needs to finally get over the hump and hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

Seattle Seahawks

Sam Darnold will start for the Seattle Seahawks, which means the team must do something about their offensive line. While first-round pick Grey Zabel will improve the trenches, the other guard position is a glaring weakness. If his agent cannot land an extension with the Dallas Cowboys, the Seahawks should do everything they can to land Tyler Smith.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints will be bad in 2025. However, just because they won’t win a championship doesn’t mean there’s no reason to try in the upcoming season. Second-round pick Tyler Shough will have the opportunity to prove himself as a franchise quarterback, but he’ll struggle to do so behind a weak offensive line. Tyler Smith would dramatically improve the unit and could help Shough develop into the long-awaited heir to Drew Brees.

New England Patriots

The Patriots dramatically improved over the past few months, but there’s still plenty of work to be done on this roster. While Mike Onwenu is an above-average right guard, the left guard position is essentially vacant. Former first-round pick Cole Strange is nothing special and could be converting to center, while 2024 fourth-round pick Layden Robinson had a disastrous rookie season. Smith would immediately help secure the left side of the offensive line and give franchise quarterback Drake Maye a fighting chance in 2025.
