Brian Hoyer explains why training camp statistics don't really matter

August 8, 2021 by Patriots Wire Leave a Comment

As the New England Patriots continue on with training camp, many are paying attention to how the quarterbacks are performing. For one veteran signal-caller however, statistics don’t tell the entire story in terms of performance.

Brian Hoyer  has been a part of the New England quarterback room on three separate occasions. As he indicated to the media on Thursday, he knows that statistics do not reveal everything in a quarterback battle.

Hoyer indicated the importance of remembering that the quarterbacks are practicing. Different techniques come into play on each snap.

“I don’t really follow the media very much, but for us it’s more about did you run the play correctly? Did you go to the right area? Obviously, when you’re throwing to someone you always want to complete the ball. That’s obviously the goal, but there’s also maybe you’re trying to hold a safety a certain way and now you’re throwing the ball blind. But, that is something you have to do. When Devin McCourty is back there, you can’t stare someone down. You are a little bit experimenting with things and the only chance to learn is on the practice field.”

With Hoyer being the elder statesman in the Patriots quarterback room, he has seen it all during his time in New England. He knows just how important the details of practice can be.
