Breaking: Superstar Signing Likely Means the End of Patriots Wideout

March 26, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

stefon diggs signing

The New England Patriots are officially signing wide receiver Stefon Diggs, which will likely spell the end of at least one weapon. According to the breaking news, after a visit with the team, the former Pro Bowler is signing a three-year deal with the organization, and the Patriots have one of the deepest receiving corps in the league. Diggs joins Kendrick Bourne as the main No. 1 pass catcher for quarterback Drake Maye, but this could make wide receiver DeMario Douglas expendable. New England will probably be open to trading one of their weapons, but Douglas could be on the chopping block since he’s more of a return specialist.

Originally selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the former Liberty product led the entire pack in receiving yards since Bourne had a “down” campaign last year. It was usual for a specialist like Douglas to lead the unit in those yardage, but that came with the organization figuring themselves out under former head coach Jerod Mayo. Now that Mike Vrabel is in town, the Patriots could be back in business to firesale most of their wide receiver depth, but Douglas could intrigue some trade interest. He has a lot of potential, and no matter if the Patriots release or trade him, these five teams will likely take a chance on Douglas.

Next Possible Teams

New Orleans Saints

The Saints need another capable wideout to help soothe the transition for what could be Derek Carr’s last season with them. General Manager Mickey Loomis refuses to rebuild, so while the fans are angry that Carr is returning, it might have been the end of Chris Olave as well. Rashid Shaheed and Brandin Cooks are average at best, but they won’t be able to hold it down if Olave decides to request a trade. Douglas won’t outplay any of these weapons, but he could be a reliable slot option in the aerial attack.

Carolina Panthers

Quarterback Bryce Young finally has a promising offense, and the end of the 2024 campaign is a preview of what could happen this upcoming season. Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker will have their moments, but they might not be enough for a postseason run. Adam Thielen is probably in his last season in the league, so this could mean the Panthers should sign another receiver. Douglas won’t dramatically change this pass offense, but he’s another weapon Young could target.

Kansas City Chiefs

It will be an interesting 2025 season for Patrick Mahomes and it’s pass-catching game. They had one of the worst pass attacks, but if they want to get back in the Super Bowl again, they can’t survive with just Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice, who had some legal troubles. The team brought back Marquise Brown, but he’s a band-aid to the bigger problem and Douglas could finally break out catching darts from Mahomes.

Los Angeles Chargers

It has been a failing offseason for the Los Angeles Chargers, looking for a capable receiver. Mike Williams is washed up and Quentin Johnston is depleting each game that goes by. 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey has the best set of hands. After missing out on DK Metcalf, the team might have no other choice but to trade for Douglas.

Dallas Cowboys

Out of these possible destinations, the Dallas Cowboys need a new wideout in the worst possible way. They lost Brandin Cooks this offseason, and they should roll the dice on some upside talent or a veteran. Dallas can’t rely solely on the draft to pair with CeeDee Lamb, so Douglas could be a possible fit to get something going.
