Bill Belichick Reveals What Mac Jones Showed This Summer

September 1, 2021 by The Spun

Mac Jones on the field for the Patriots.

On Tuesday, Bill Belichick released Cam Newton and officially named rookie Mac Jones the starting quarterback of the New England Patriots.

The decision surprised many, as Newton was widely expected to be the starter throughout much of the summer. However, Jones showed he was capable during preseason, and that combined with Newton’s vaccination status and occasional so-so play led to Belichick trusting the No. 15 overall pick with the keys to his offense.

During this morning’s press conference, Belichick spoke mostly about what went into cutting Newton, but also gave a tiny bit of insight into what Jones showed during training camp that earned him the job.

“First of all, he’s had a high level of production,” Belichick said, via Amaka Ubaka of 7News Boston. “I feel like he’s been able to show an ability to do things the way we want them done at a productive level. He’s young, I’m sure he’ll continue to learn and grow. We’ll see where that goes. That’s why we drafted him and I think he’s come in and performed at a level that supports that.”

Now that he has officially been dubbed the starter, Jones has less than two weeks to prepare for his NFL regular season debut.

His quarterback counterpart in Week 1? None other than his old Alabama teammate, Tua Tagovailoa.
