Bill Belichick usually has a great track record of offseason moves, but he might be rethinking one of them soon.
Belichick surprised a lot of people with the re-signing of linebacker Mack Wilson, per Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard.
“Probably the most surprising player to return the organization: linebacker Mack Wilson,” Bedard wrote, (first transcribed by NESN). “Sources around the team were stunned Belichick OK’d that move.”
The Patriots acquired Wilson from the Cleveland Browns last year when they traded Chase Winovich. He got some snaps when he was first acquired but didn’t see a single defensive snap in the final five games of the season.
He finished the season with 36 total tackles (15 solo), 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and one pass defended.
If Wilson doesn’t pan out, Belichick’s decision to bring him back for another season will only look worse.
