Bill Belichick Deflects Question About Quarterback Competition

July 27, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Cam Newton and Bill Belichick speak on the sideline during a New England Patriots game.

Who will start at quarterback for the New England Patriots this year? That’s what every fan in Foxborough wants to know, especially now that training camp is underway.

On Tuesday morning, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was asked if there will be an open competition at quarterback over the next month. His answer was vague, but it sounds like a competition will unfold at camp.

“Every one of us has to go out and establish our level of performance in whatever our role or capacity is,” Belichick told reporters. “It’s a new season. … That includes all of us.”

The Patriots have plenty of options to choose from at quarterback, as they have Brian Hoyer, Mac Jones, Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham on their roster.

Question (via @IanSteeleABC6): Will there be an open competition for starting quarterback?

Bill Belichick (deflecting): “Every one of us has to go out and establish our level of performance in whatever our role or capacity is. It’s a new season. … That includes all of us.”

Newton started in 15 games for New England last season, but he only had 2,657 passing yards and eight touchdown passes.

Even though Newton struggled throughout the 2020 season, the Patriots re-signed him in March to a one-year deal. During a recent appearance on ESPN Radio’s “Keyshawn, JWill & Zubin,” Newton shared his thoughts about the franchise.

“For me, the Patriots’ organization has been impeccable … so my time there has been everything I could have asked for,” Newton said. “I guess it’s now time for me to uphold my end of the bargain, through and through.”

If Newton doesn’t look impressive at camp, he could potentially lose his job to Hoyer, Jones or Stidham.

Only time will tell if Newton can hold up his end of the bargain and win the starting job for the Patriots.
