New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is just 30 wins away from tying the late-great Don Shula for the most head-coaching wins in NFL history. But while it may take him about three seasons at least to reach that mark, he could make some less desirable history first.
According to CBS Sports, Belichick is statistically closer to reaching the NFL’s all-time regular season loss record by a head coach than the all-time wins record. His 152 losses as a head coach are 13 away from Jeff Fisher and the late Dan Reeves’ current shared record of 165.
Even if Belichick goes 12-5 over the next two seasons, he’ll still be several games closer to reaching that all-time loss record than the all-time win record.
Of course, the metrics change a little bit if we change the category to regular season and postseason wins and losses.

There’s been increased debate lately over whether Bill Belichick is really the greatest head coach of all-time or if the six Super Bowls he won with the Patriots are attributed to Tom Brady’s greatness as a quarterback.
The recent success that Andy Reid has found with the Kansas City Chiefs and even in his prior tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles is a big reason that people are asking questions.
But if Belichick retires as the NFL’s all-time leader in wins, there won’t be much room for a debate. Not for a long time.
