The New England Patriots aren’t in any rush to publicly clarify their quarterback situation.
Bill Belichick declined to name a starter, instead saying he’ll “play the best players” at every position. Trade rumors regarding Mac Jones have added more speculation of Bailey Zappe getting a chance to earn playing time this summer.
Speaking at a youth football clinic Wednesday, per Bob Socci of 98.5 The Sports Hub, Zappe said he’s’ ready to compete if given the opening.
“If my opportunity presents itself, I’m going to take full advantage of it,” Zappe said. “I’m going to do everything I can to help the team win. That’s really all I can say from that standpoint. That’s Coach Belichick’s decision, whatever he decides. But if the opportunity presents itself, I’m going to be ready and take advantage of it.”

A year after making Jones a first-round pick, the Pats selected Zappe in the fourth round. When Jones injured his ankle, the former Western Kentucky standout created a quarterback controversy by posting a 100.9 quarterback rating in four games.
Zappe didn’t play in New England’s final 10 games, but that hasn’t quelled questions over who will open 2023 under center. Patriots players are reportedly “split” between the two quarterbacks.
