On Tuesday, it was reported by multiple outlets that there’s still tension lingering between Patriots quarterback Mac Jones and head coach Bill Belichick.
Longtime Patriots reporter Mike Giardi had additional information to share regarding this rift. Let’s just say Belichick’s decision to put Matt Patricia and Joe Judge in charge of the offense didn’t sit well with some people in the building.
“I don’t know what Bill (Belichick) thought was going to happen,” Giardi was told by one of his sources. “The decisions he made set the table for Mac’s regression. For the entire offensive regression.”
That’s not all Giardi had to share about the dysfunction that plagued the Patriots in 2022.
“The offensive dysfunction was felt on all levels of the offense and by all position groups,” Giardi tweeted. “There were coaches who knew that this system/play calling/play design was not up to previous standards set in Foxboro with Josh McDaniels in charge. The players felt it.”
Talked to many people about this. To a man, those who have seen/felt this roll their eyes. One source said to me, “I don’t know what Bill (Belichick) thought was going to happen. The decisions he made set the table for Mac’s regression. For the entire offensive regression.”(more) https://t.co/19tHQoH3P2

Belichick hasn’t publicly said that he made the wrong choice, but replacing Patricia with Bill O’Brien is a huge step in the right direction.
Time will tell if Belichick and Jones can mend their relationship. If not, the Patriots may have to pursue another quarterback.
