Eagles Take Season Opener 2–0 Against Bears in Defensive Battle

It didn’t take long for Boston College field hockey to get on the board on its opener against Maine. In fact, it only took over a minute for the Eagles to score their first goal of the season.

Off a Klara Muffeleman assist, Madelelive Drion started the scoring early for the Eagles (1–0), who lost 4–1 to North Carolina in the ACC tournament last fall. Sprinting down the turf, Muffeleman weaved through the Bears defense, juking her defenders.

Then, sweeping the ball to Drion, Muffeleman set the Eagles up with an optimal scoring opportunity, which ended in an Eagles score to go up 1–0. The Eagles ended up beating the Bears (0–1) 2–0 thanks to two goals in the first ten minutes of the game.

The second goal came 9:38 into play when Malea Weber delivered for BC.

Dribbling the ball past her defenders, Weber did not seem fazed by the Bears’ defense. She launched the ball past Rozarie Mrazova and into Maine’s net, giving the Eagles their second goal of the afternoon.

While the Eagles’ first two goals came quickly, the second half proved to be a punch-for-punch battle as the Eagles got into foul trouble, picking up 43 penalties to the Bears’ 18.

While the Eagles were plagued with penalties all afternoon, that didn’t stop them from dominating the Bears defensively as they silenced them for the entire matchup.

BC was unable to find a spark on offense either, though, as the second, third, and fourth periods were unsuccessful for both squads.

While the Bears notched a corner in the first half, they were unable to convert on the play. As halftime rolled around, BC maintained its two goal lead.

And they never looked back. Holding the Bears to no corners, the Eagles prevented Maine from getting anything started.

Even though BC earned two corner opportunities, they were unable to make another dent on the scoreboard.

In the final frame, neither team were able to get the ball in the back of the net. Fortunately, for the Eagles, that didn’t matter, as they took their season opener on the road.
