After an impressive series win over Virginia two weekends ago, Boston College baseball (7-9, 2-4) was swept by No. 5 Florida State (18-1, 3-0) over the weekend. But before Birdball traveled to Tallahassee, they played Merrimack (3-12) at home last Tuesday and beat them 10-5.
In that game, BC took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and didn’t look back. The Warriors made it a one-run game after scoring five runs in the sixth, but BC put the game to rest in the eighth, scoring four runs in the frame. Kyle Wolff hit a three-run homer in the eighth and finished with 5 RBI.
The Eagles’ trip to Florida State did not go as well as their first ACC series against Virginia. The Seminoles outscored BC 28-4 and their starting pitchers did not allow a single earned run in 17.2 innings.
On Friday, BC lost 8-2, and their first three pitchers, Bobby Chicoine, Peter Schaefer, and, Brady Miller all allowed two runs apiece. The pitching staff gave up 14 hits and the offense had just six hits. Chicoine started the game and took a loss, his second of the season.
The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader was a nightmare for the Eagles. They lost 14-0 and only had two hits in the run-rule-shortened game. Tyler Mudd got the start and lasted just two innings, giving up six runs on seven hits.
Game two of the doubleheader was almost as forgettable as the first. The Seminoles won 6-2 and BC hitting struck out 11 times. The Eagles had 5 hits as a team and didn’t lead in this game or the entire series.
After three bad losses in a row, Birdball’s team ERA is a whopping 8.05. This week, BC will play home games against Sacred Heart on Tuesday and Northeastern on Wednesday. Then, No. 17 North Carolina (16-4, 2-4) will come to Chestnut Hill over the weekend.
