Weiss: who’s in, who’s out for the Summer Celtics

NBA: Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics

For those starving for Celtics news, former CelticsBlogger Jared Weiss has a ton of goodies in his latest dispatch at The Athletic. Boston does not currently have a first round pick in next week’s NBA Draft after trading #16 to Oklahoma City with Kemba Walker for Al Horford and Moses Brown. There’s obviously still a possibility that Brad Stevens could get back in to what is widely considered a deep class, but for now, the Celtics are only slotted at #45 in the second round.

However, that doesn’t mean the Celtics don’t have young players to showcase in next month’s Summer League showcase in Las Vegas. Per Weiss, last year’s two first-rounders, Aaron Nesmith and Payton Pritchard, will be with the Summer Celtics, an opportunity they missed last year because of the pandemic.

They’ll be joined by Year 3 players Romeo Langford and Carsen Edwards in Vegas from August 8th to 17th. Langford has only played sixty-one games in green over the last two years, so any experience is good experience from the #14 pick. Weiss notes that Langford is expected to manage some point forward duties next season, so expect to seem him handling the ball more in the desert. After turning in strong NCAA Tournament and Summer League performances into a four-year contract in 2019, Edwards will look to recapture that magic in a make-or-break season for the undersized guard. Grant Williams is not expected to join the team.

As previously reported, Yam Madar will also join the Celtics for Summer League. The Euro stash point guard spent last season maturing in the Israeli Winner League as its Most Improved Player, averaging 17.1 points and 5.2 assists per game. Without a guaranteed deal, Madar could in effect be competing for a guaranteed deal or a two-way spot with Tremont Waters. Per Weiss, Waters is training this summer away from Boston in the hopes of a bigger opportunity next year. Whether that’s with the Celtics or another team is unclear. Fan favorite Tacko Fall is in the same boat, but is eligible to sign a third and final two-way contract with Boston.
