Nets Could Be A Landing Spot For This Celtics Guard

June 2, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

As the Brooklyn Nets rebuild, they might target an asset from their Eastern Conference rival, the Boston Celtics. With luxury tax limits restricting the team and Celtics stars pushing for big moves, trading Derrick White to the Nets could become a realistic option.

Nets Could Be A Landing Spot For This Celtics Guard

The reigning 2024 NBA champions fell in Game 6 of the second round at the hands of the New York Knicks. To make matters worse, 27-year-old superstar Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles during the series and will miss a chunk of next season. Adding to their challenges, Boston faces a massive financial burden, with their luxury tax bill projected to reach $500 million in 2025-26. This financial strain may prompt the Celtics to trade key players to regain stability.

During an episode of the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed Boston would be making changes to their roster. “They’re going to make trades. The Boston Celtics will have a much different roster next season,” Charania said. “The question is just how severe, as far as, the movement is going to be for them.”

Boston Looking To Trade

Boston may look to move White, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis. White, in particular, has been terrific since joining the team in 2022, averaging 16.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists this season. Jaylen Brown has also been linked to trade rumors, but to create salary cap space, Boston would likely trade White.

Teams showing an interest in White include the Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, and Sacramento Kings. If the Celtics trade the guard, they gain draft picks and relieve some financial burden. However, keeping him would stabilize their lineup, especially with Tatum sidelined, but it would further deepen their financial troubles. The team must decide between prioritizing roster strength and financial flexibility.

White’s Fit With The Nets

Although Western Conference teams seem the most interested, with ample cap space and draft assets, the Nets could outbid any franchise. The team holds four draft picks and has the salary cap to pursue free agents or make trades. Though White would join a rebuilding team, his experience would add significant value to Brooklyn’s young roster. At 30, he is a respected veteran with championship and gold medal experience, providing valuable mentorship and leadership.

By joining the Nets, he would strengthen the frontcourt and bring much-needed stability. White’s defensive and offensive talents, along with his perimeter shooting, are undeniable. He would fit well alongside Cameron Johnson, Cam Thomas, and Nic Claxton, offering commitment, tireless effort, and the ability to log extra minutes. Moreover, his presence would enhance the team’s overall connection and reliability, making him a valuable addition to the lineup.

If White joins Brooklyn, coach Jordi Fernandez will appreciate his defensive skills. He consistently pushes players to compete with heart and aggression. Derrick White would undoubtedly be a valuable addition to the Nets.
