After failing to come to a contract agreement with Los Angeles earlier this year, free-agent point guard Dennis Schroder is set to join the Lakers’ longtime rival in 2021.
On Tuesday evening, Schroder took to Instagram to announce his signing with the Boston Celtics.
“I’m proud to announce that for the 2021-22 season I’ll be playing with the Boston Celtics! This is one of the best franchises in NBA history and it will be a honour to put on the green and white and do what I love,” Schroder wrote. “I’m going out there every night and leaving it all on the floor for the city!! Who’s ready?!”
While nearing the end of his first season with the Lakers, Schroder was reportedly offered a four-year, $84 million contract extension, per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. The eighth-year veteran shocked the NBA world by turning this lucrative offer down.
Schroder’s one-year deal with the Celtics is set to earn him $5.9 million in 2021-22 — far less than he could’ve made in Los Angeles.

Schroder averaged 15.4 points and 5.8 assists per game with the Lakers this past season. Instead of taking the money and staying put in 2021-22, the 27-year-old PG will try to show his worth on a one-year prove-it deal in Boston — looking to make even more in 2022 free agency.
The Lakers filled Schroder’s vacated point guard spot with a trade for Russell Westbrook earlier this month.
