Dennis Schroder was hopeful that he’d land a lucrative contract in free agency. Considering the first wave of free agency is over and he’s still unsigned, that’s probably not going to happen.
Back in March, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that Schroder turned down a four-year, $84 million extension from the Los Angeles Lakers. That move might come back to haunt him for the next few years.
According to ESPN insider Jordan Schultz, the Boston Celtics have offered Schroder a one-year deal that’s worth $5.9 million. Unfortunately for Schroder, that might be his best offer on the table.
“Celtics have offered Dennis Schroder a one-year deal – at the taxpayer $5.9M MLE – per league sources,” Schultz said. “The current hold up for Schroder is twofold: He wants the full MLE – which is $9.5M – and also seeks a second-year player option. Boston doesn’t want to be hard-capped.”

Schroder’s decision to turn down an $84 million extension is already being labeled a major blunder by NBA fans around the world.
“Dennis Schroder really fumbled the bag,” an NBA fan tweeted.

Schroder wasn’t awful by any means for the Lakers, averaging 15.4 points and 5.8 assists per game this past season. The issue is that he’s not worth $20-25 million per year.
If Schroder does accept a short-term deal with the Celtics, he could potentially rebuild his value with a really strong 2021-22 season.
