LeBron James on Celtics: ‘Sometimes it seems like they get a little bored because of how great they are’

May 20, 2025 by Hoops Hype

On the latest episode this week of his podcast “Mind the Game” with Steve Nash, the Los Angeles Lakers star James spoke out about the Boston Celtics in the wake of their elimination from the playoffs. James said during his remarks that he believes the Celtics can get bored and complacent at times on the court. “You think they get bored sometimes?” said James. “Like, they’ve been doing this s–t so long. It seems like they get bored sometimes with the – I don’t want to say the process – because they are who they are. “When you look at [Jayson] Tatum and [Jaylen] Brown, this is years and years and years and years,” James added. “They’ve punched their 10,000 hours, but sometimes it seems like they get a little bored because of how great they are, not only as those two as individuals, but them as a team. And sometimes, it looks like they get bored.”

More on this storyline

Who’s the most Jordan-like guy in the league right now? Kenny Smith: Zero. Not Anthony Edwards? KS: Ant is a very good, talented player. But, O.K.: are you into music? Yes. KS: Is there anyone who has touched the fibre of music the way Michael Jackson has? Prince? KS: No, I’m talking about today. It’s not even close. Michael Jordan touched the fibre of basketball that no one will ever touch today. Larry Bird touched the fibre of basketball that no one’s touching today. Maybe LeBron. LeBron is touching the Larry Bird–Magic Johnson fibre. He’s not touching the Jordan fibre. -via The New Yorker / May 20, 2025
Steve Nash: I know a lot of players from my generation are critical of the game. But I watch these playoff games, and I love it. I love the NBA. I love the little battles, the chess matches, the randomness — but with principles. To me, the game’s in a beautiful place. LeBron James: And I loved it growing up. But sometimes, the older generation makes you not want to love the game you grew up watching. Like, I grew up loving Knicks vs. Bulls playoff series. Pacers vs. Knicks. I loved that. And even though I never saw MJ live — I’m from a small town outside of Cleveland — when the Cavs got the chance to play him, that was exciting. -via YouTube / May 20, 2025
LeBron James: But now, that generation talks so much s*** about today’s game, it makes you go back and watch those old games — and it makes you not even want to appreciate them the way you did as a kid. Steve Nash: You go back and watch now, and it doesn’t feel as good as it did then. It was great — it was the best on the planet. LeBron James: Or like, they say, ‘We can’t be friends,’ or, ‘Why are you smiling on the court?’ Then someone pulls a clip of them standing next to an opponent during the Finals, smiling and laughing. Like, what the hell? Can we just be honest? Steve Nash: Memories are fallible. Memories aren’t perfect. LeBron James: If you want your movie — you write your own script.” -via YouTube / May 20, 2025
