Begarin asked Boston to allow him to play in Summer League

2021 second round pick Juhann Begarin will join the Boston Celtics for 2021 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

Begarin was not a part of the Celtics original Summer League roster. After drafting the 18-year-old wing, Brad Stevens said he was unsure if Begarin would play in Summer League or not. Begarin had other plans.

The 6’5’’ wing said the original plan was for him to return to France, but that he “asked Brad Stevens to play in Summer League” and for a “chance to show what I can do”.

Begarin said being with the Celtics in Boston to prepare for Las Vegas is only the second time he’s been to the United States of America. His prior trip to the US was to take part in Basketball Without Borders.

Asked to describe his game, Begarin said “I like to defense. I like to push the ball and finish strong through the basket. I like to steal the ball. I need to improve my shot, my passing game and my skills.”

Summer League will see Begarin play alongside current Celtics Carsen Edwards, Romeo Langford, Aaron Nesmith and Payton Pritchard. He’ll also join 2019 draftee Yam Madar, who is joining Boston for his first NBA experience this summer.

At this point, it’s unknown what Boston’s plans are for Begarin for the 2021-22 season. The Celtics currently have 13 players under contract. That leaves just two open roster spots, and Boston has a rumored trade pending with the Atlanta Hawks and Sacramento Kings that could take them up to 14 players under contract.
