The Boston Celtics have signed rookie wing John Tonje to a two-way contract. Tonje just finished a 10 Day contract with Boston, and is staying with the team on a two-way deal. The Celtics acquired Tonje from the Utah Jazz ahead of the trade deadline.
Dalano Banton’s 10 Day contract with the Celtics also expired on March 1. This leaves Boston with three open standard roster spots. The team will likely go the maximum allowable 14 days with fewer than 14 players on standard deals, before filling at least two of the openings.
The Celtics are managing their team salary in order to finish the season under the luxury tax line. Doing so will allow Boston to take steps towards resetting the luxury tax repeater penalties. The Celtics will need to stay out of the tax for another season to fully reset the tax repeater clock.
