The Celtics star played through a partially torn meniscus for the second half of the season. After undergoing knee surgery, he is expected to be ready for training camp.

Jaylen Brown underwent a successful right knee arthroscopic debridement procedure, the Celtics announced on Wednesday. He is expected to participate in training camp, which begins in October, without limitation.

Since mid-February, Brown dealt with what the Celtics officially listed as a right knee impingement. ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne initially reported that Brown received pain injections ahead of the postseason and later, after the playoffs concluded, reported that he had a partially torn meniscus in his right knee. Brown missed 11 games with the injury during the 2024-25 season.

When Celtics general manager Brad Stevens spoke to reporters on May 19th, he expressed optimism about Brown’s prognosis.

“The knee is in a good place, structurally,” Stevens said. “So I think he felt comfortable getting out there and going after it, and, hopefully, he’ll feel better after being off of it for a couple of weeks here.”

But, on May 24th, Brown told CelticsBlog that surgery to repair that torn meniscus remained on the table.

“l got a lot of doctors I gotta get evaluated with — see the potential for surgery versus no surgery, wait to speak to the [Celtics] organization,” he said. “For now, it’s just rest and recovery. I’m taking a step back from a long season. Mentally, it was a lot of stuff going on.”

An arthroscopic debridement is a surgical procedure performed using an arthroscope. In this procedure, the cartilage or the bone that is damaged is removed using surgical instruments, and the edges of the articular cartilage that are rough will be smoothed.

Brown averaged 22.1 points on 44.1% shooting alongside 7.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists across 11 postseason games. His rebounds and assists were both playoff career highs.

In addition to Brown’s knee injury, Jayson Tatum underwent surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon and is expected to miss most, if not all, of the Celtics’ 2025-26 season.

This story will be updated as more information is available.
