If the Playoffs Started Today, Boston is the Clear East Favorite

March 6, 2026 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Boston is firing on all cylinders as they prepare for their playoff push. The Celtics will be a title contender this postseason, despite some critics believing they were a draft lottery team before the season opener. However, they will only be viewed as a legitimate championship contender if Jayson Tatum is effective in his return from an Achilles injury. Momentum and luck may be the deciding factor for the Eastern Conference favorite to reach the 2026 NBA Finals.

If the Playoffs Started Today, Boston is the Clear East Favorite

As records currently stand, the Celtics are the second seed and sit behind the Detroit Pistons. So, Boston would be facing the seven-seed Orlando Magic or the eight-seed Miami Heat. This depends entirely on the outcome of the Play-In Tournament. This would leave the top-seeded Pistons with a possibility of playing either Orlando, Miami, Charlotte, or Atlanta. Any of these teams could wind up with the eighth seed, although only Orlando or Miami, currently, can earn the seventh seed.

First Round

In a potential matchup against Orlando or Miami, the Celtics will be the unanimous favorite to win that series. However, positive momentum could result in a series extended to five games. Miami has always given Boston headaches. A potential six-game first-round series isn’t out of the question for that matchup. Moving on, Boston would face the winning team in the conference semifinals between the Cleveland Cavaliers or Toronto Raptors.

Eastern Conference Semifinals

Toronto is a division rival for Boston. However, the squad’s talent does not equal its seed. Toronto has definitely overachieved this season through fantastic team play. This is why Cleveland is the likely opponent for Boston in the second round of the playoffs. Hopefully, Tatum has had ample time to prepare himself for this series, as it has the potential to go a full seven games. Despite the Cavaliers’ talent, trading for James Harden could prove to be detrimental, considering the former superstar’s lackluster playoff history.

Eastern Conference Finals

The Eastern Conference Finals remain as a prelude for the true, legitimate title contenders. Boston will likely have the advantage of being on the easier side of the playoff bracket because the other side is a gauntlet in the East.

Detroit, New York, and Philadelphia all have a chance to reach the conference finals round, yet only one can advance. The favorite should be the New York Knicks, even with the Pistons earning the top seed of the conference. However, either team could win its way to a matchup with Boston. Philadelphia’s chances, however, rely solely on the health of superstar center Joel Embiid. If he can’t go, then they have no chance of winning in New York.

With that being said, a future conference finals matchup between Boston versus New York or Boston versus Detroit will be the best series to watch from the Eastern Conference bracket. Both predictions could result in a seven-game series. Tatum, being less than twelve months removed from his Achilles injury, will have a definitive impact on this series. Boston is the better offensive team compared to Detroit due to their jump-shooting ability, specifically regarding their three-point philosophy. New York could keep up with Boston’s firepower, but the Celtics are clearly the better defensive team over the Knicks. So, Boston should clearly be the favorite to come out of the Eastern Conference, even with Tatum participating in a conservative playing style.

Boston Celtics Primed For NBA Finals Return?

The All-Star break has come and gone, and with it, the league’s first half closes its curtains. The second half of the season will be consumed with turmoil as teams face their final gauntlet before postseason play begins. Some teams are fighting for home court advantage, others for better draft positioning, and fans will be speculating on different playoff scenarios. This time of year can make or break a fan’s team spirit. The Celtics fandom, however, is getting a boost unlike any other team as Spring approaches. The fans are exuding anticipation for Tatum’s return from tearing his Achilles tendon. It will most certainly boost his teammates’ confidence going forward as they prepare for the playoffs.

The void Tatum left has given ample opportunities for other Celtics to elevate their level of play, and they’ve answered the call. The rookie, Hugo Gonzalez, as well as Jordan Walsh and the newly acquired Luka Garza have shown awesome upside any time their on the floor. The fresh trade piece, Nikola Vucevic, seems to be getting acclimated well within Joe Mazzulla‘s system. He may even be a promising mentor for Neemias Queta. Plus, the MVP-level play out of Jaylen Brown has taken the league by storm. With snipers like Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, and Derrick White by his side, Brown could even lock up the MVP award. Boston is proving why they are in constant title contention. They’re even changing the minds and hearts of long-time critics and skeptics of theirs.

Celtics skeptic and Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright said, “I think the Boston Celtics are going to win the [NBA] championship with Jayson coming back.” Wright has been a routine doubter of Boston’s, but it seems he has come around. Though he did preface his comments with some hesitation towards Tatums’ progress in live gameplay. Wright stated, “I feel like he has two months before he needs to be 100% and not meaning 100% of old Jayson Tatum. … However, good he’s going to be in this part of his rehab back.” This change of heart by the analyst bodes well for the Celtics and their fans alike.

Clearly, Boston should be considered as the Eastern Conference favorite and potentially the favorite to win the championship.
