Brad Stevens has removed his name from consideration for the University of North Carolina head coaching job, sources tell CBS Sports. The Tar Heels fired Hubert Davis as head coach on Tuesday and Stevens quickly emerged at the top of their list.
Stevens, 49, left Butler to become head coach of the Boston Celtics in 2013. Stevens had led Butler to consecutive national championship appearances while at Butler and then quickly transitioned to one of the NBA’s better head coaches.
In 2021, Stevens moved from his head coaching role to run the Celtics’ front office to replace Danny Ainge.
Stevens has been pursued multiple times to become head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers and he has consistently rebuffed their overtures.
The Tar Heels also have Tommy Lloyd, Dusty May, TJ Otzelberger and Billy Donovan on their target list.
