Bill Simmons Wants The Celtics To Draft Bronny James As A ‘Hostage’

June 21, 2024 by The Spun

Bill Simmons of The Ringer wants the Boston Celtics to draft Bronny James next week, but it’s not because he believes LeBron’s son will play a pivotal role for the defending champs.

Simmons wants the Celtics to draft Bronny so they can hold him hostage. And no, we’re not kidding. He unleashed this wild take on the latest episode of his self-titled podcast.

“Here’s my case: everybody says this draft sucks. The Celtics are so deep… anyone in this draft isn’t going to play for them,” Simmons said, via Awful Announcing. “Why not take Bronny and you basically hold him hostage? Because all these other teams want him, right?”

Simmons received a little pushback for this take, but he then explained what he meant by referring to Bronny as a hostage.

“No, I’m saying for the asset,” Simmons continued. “The Lakers, you want him? Well we took Bronny, give us Max Christie. How bad do you want him? I would say Bronny the asset at 30 as a trade thing is worth more than anyone they could get here.”

If we’re being completely honest, this take is on-brand for Simmons. He’s always trying to think out of the box in a way that’s controversial but also somewhat smart.

While this strategy could do wonders for the Celtics, it’s important to note that LeBron’s camp is playing hardball. They keep saying that his top priority isn’t to team up with Bronny.
