Are the Boston Celtics contenders or pretenders when it comes to the 2023 NBA championship? On one hand, they are running back the roster that came within two wins of the 2022 title, reinforced by point guard Malcolm Brogdon and veteran forward Danilo Gallinari.
On the other, Gallinari is out for at least the regular season and possibly longer, Brogdon is often out injured and big man Robert Williams III will reportedly miss 4-to-6 weeks as he recovers from the second knee surgery he’s going to have in less than six months. Even the greenest of teamers have to admit that’s far from an optimal start for a team intending to compete for a title.
But, at least in the eyes of Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz, there is an argument for both.
