NEW @CelticsCLNS – Why did the #Celtics trade back on Thursday?
Keep following the $. C’s will likely sign Williams/Shulga to 2ways, which don’t carry cap hits. They got future 2nds with another move likely needed to retain Horford/Kornet. Keep an eye on Niang, Hauser, Simons. pic.x.com/D3Sj2Ly8x8 – 2:23 PM

Shams Charania: The Lakers perspective is they’re doing everything they can to build the team the right way, to try to compete for a championship. We know they’re in the center market right now. So you look at centers like Brook Lopez, Clint Capela, Al Horford, all available in the market. They’re also have Dorian Finney-Smith, he’s got a player option decision, $15.4 million player option. He also faces a deadline later today, so they’re doing what they can, but LeBron James clearly is of the mindset that he wants to compete for a championship, and he’s going to be monitoring very closely. Are the Lakers going to make the move that puts them in position to seriously compete in that vaulted Western Conference? And then, if not, where do those conversations go that becomes a subplot of this offseason. -via Twitter @ShamsCharania / June 29, 2025
Looking to continue shedding salary, the Celtics have explored the idea of flipping Anfernee Simons’ $27.7 million expiring contract, according to league sources. In such a move, they would be aiming to accomplish two organizational directives Brad Stevens emphasized after the first round of the NBA Draft on Wednesday: regaining more roster flexibility and setting up a path to retain free agents Luke Kornet and Al Horford. -via New York Times / June 27, 2025
The Celtics have already had an active offseason, but Stevens set the stage for more activity after the draft when he said he wants to retain Kornet and Horford. The team currently has minimal flexibility under the second apron and would need to cut even more salary to keep both big men while avoiding the tax. -via New York Times / June 27, 2025
