Women’s Recap: Fleet unable to break through the Frost, lose 4-3 in OT.

January 3, 2025 by Stanley Cup Of Chowder

PWHL

Boston gets its first road point of the year in another disappointing result.

For a period with no goals Fleet fans could walk away from the period with their heads held high. The teams traded penalties early in the period but Nicole Hensley and Aerin Frankel acted like the Team USA goalies they are and stood tall. Minnesota had a few good chances but the end of the period was all Fleet as they had some encouraging sustained pressure.

The second started off well for both teams but midway through the front fell off as Minnesota notched two quick goals. Boston showed little life in the period. While the shots were close to the Frost’s tally the Fleet had no dangerous opportunities despite being down two goals.

Unlike Monday when down multiple goals in the third Boston took some shots. Hilary Knight would put Boston on the board cleaning up a juicy rebound by Hensley. The Frost would shortly return the lead to a two goal margin. Susanna Tapani made her former team pay when she scored two goals late in the period to even up the score line and send us to overtime.

The extra period saw Boston with numerous chances after the Frost kept icing the puck, but the Fleet were never able to capitalize. Minnesota had a few breakaways against the run of play and in the dying moments put one of them away despite an excellent showing by Frankel to take the extra point.

Highlights:

Game Notes

  • Once again when the Fleet shoot the puck their odds of scoring goals somehow go up. In one of their highest volume periods of the season they put 13 shots on goal in the third, scoring three goals along the way.
  • The Fleet need some discipline. The PK remains a stalwart for them but five penalties is a bit much to give the best power play unit in the league, only one goal this time but it will not last if they keep giving up opportunities.
  • Frankel returned to the pipes after her first game off and looked strong but ultimately could not hold off the Frost enough for the usually anemic offense to make a difference.
  • The road trip continues with three games remaining.
  • Boston will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Seattle to play Montreal again.
