Women’s Recap: Fleet limping back to port, survive Ottawa with a 2-1 OT win.

January 12, 2025 by Stanley Cup Of Chowder

PWHL

The long road trip ends for the Fleet with a narrow OT victory.

Starting theme the Fleet seemed energized and primed to score on rookie goalie Gwyn Philips in only her second career start. Boston would take the first penalty and despite a solid effort the Charge had a puck deflect off two of their players right after the penalty expired. The Fleet would even it up as Alina Mueller made a terrific move to eventually set up Sidney Morin and the puck ended up on Philips arm, which then went into the net as she went backwards to try and cover the puck. Boston got a late power play that they were unable to capitalize on and even gave up a few dangerous chances, that ran into the second.

The middle frame saw both teams show some very tired legs. Boston was clearly feeling their extended road trip as Ottawa carried play. With 61 seconds on the clock Hannah Bilka put a controversial goal in off her skate. It was initially called good, much to the ire of the crowd, due to replays showing a ‘kicking motion’, on review the call was overturned and no goal awarded.

The legs really started to go in the third with neither team truly separating once again. Boston had a very extended delayed penalty with some great opportunities both during the delay and on the skater advantage but were unable to finish. A second power play later in the period was not as effective.

The overtime was as high flying as it always is with both teams having dangerous chances. It was Morin with her second of the night that gave Boston the extra points.

Highlights:

Game Notes

  • The Fleet had a strong advantage in power plays for the first time in awhile but were unable to capitalize at all, and in fact almost scored on themselves on a delayed penalty.
  • The goalie matchup featured two familiar faces as the last two Northeastern goalies met against each other for the first time. Neither goalie had any major slip ups.
  • This was Boston’s fourth straight OT game, the league record is five consecutive games.
  • The Fleet will now have 11 days off and will then play their first home game in a long time when Toronto comes to Lowell on the 22nd.
