Toronto Maple Leafs Extend Defenceman For Two Years

January 4, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced they have extended defenceman Philippe Myers to a two-year contract extension. Myers will earn $850K per season beginning next season when his contract kicks in. This is the first multi-year contract he’s signed since 2020 with the Philadelphia Flyers where he inked a three-year deal. His new contract will expire at the end of the 2026-27 season, he’ll be 30 years old.

Toronto Extend Myers

General manager Brad Treliving acquired Myers in the offseason. The two sides agreed to a one-year deal at league minimum, $750K. Now, the defenceman will be on Toronto’s payroll for the remainder of this season, plus two more, unless he gets traded. It was reported by ESPN’s Kevin Weekes on Sunday that there could be some traction on an extension. Less than a week later, the deal is sealed.

After four seasons with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the QMJHL, he went undrafted. However, Myers was signed to an entry-level contract by the Flyers in September 2015. He then played parts of two seasons with the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms, before making his NHL debut in the 2018-19 season. In his rookie year, the defenceman played 21 games and provided a goal and an assist for Philadelphia. Eventually, he would go on to play for the Nashville Predators and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

His Role With the Leafs

Going into this season, Myers was a depth defenceman. On the depth chart at the start of training camp, he sat behind other right-handed D-men Conor Timmins, Jani Hakanpaa and Timothy Liljegren. However, Myers continued to battle for his spot in the lineup and it has paid off. Due to a poor preseason and fit with Craig Berube’s system, Liljegren was traded to the San Jose Sharks. Also, Hakanpaa has been dealing with a lengthy knee injury, which provided Myers some more room in the Maple Leafs lineup.

Now, he is partnered up with Morgan Rielly on Toronto’s first D-pair. He averages 17:08 of ice time this season, the second-most of his career. This season, he’s scored one goal and recorded an assist in 11 games for the Maple Leafs.
