The New York Rangers Make a Very Interesting Off-Ice Move

April 24, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The New York Rangers are in the news today and it is a good news story. The Rangers on-ice situation could be described as a mess today in terms of a player personnel perspective and also, the fact that as a contender, they didn’t even make the playoffs. That is never a good sign. On the contrary, this contract extension to GM Chris Drury is a bode of confidence for him as a respected hockey community person, an excellent executive of a competitive team. Drury is a great leader of the game, and deserves a shot at a rebuild. With Peter Laviolette the coaching staff recently dismissed, it is a clean slate of sorts for which Drury can operate.

The Rangers, just this season, check this out. Out were Ryan Lindgren, Filip Chytil, Kaapo Kakko, to swap in for J.T. Miller, William Borgen as an example. That has made for a huge mix-up within the dressing room atmosphere. Also, it kind of builds on the discussion of a re-tooling opportunity for Drury to see come to fruition. The timeline can’t be anymore than a year or two, you’d have to think in the Big Apple.

Within the entire hockey market in the United States of America, Drury is a respected member of that fraternity. His playing resume includes the 2001 Stanley Cup Championship alongside greats of the game like Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg. Additionally, his stats as an NHLer included 12 NHL campaigns, registering 615 career points. He had a career-high of 69 points. Oh yeah, and what else, the year he won the cup, he even potted 65 points. Prior to the NHL, he had played four years at Boston University, home of the Terriers.

Drury first got promoted to general manager in May of 2021. At the time, John Davidson had been suddenly dismissed of his post in Rangers management. He has worked in management for a while now since the conclusion of his playing days.

He has also represented his club on and off the ice for Team USA on numerous occasions. Drury is a guy who was an assistant general manager with the Team USA at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.
