Team Captain Returning to the Colorado Avalanche

April 16, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

Gabriel Landeskog has not played in the NHL since Game 6 of the 2022 Stanley Cup, when the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup. Three years later, the team captain is returning to the Avs just in time for what the franchise hopes is another Stanley Cup run.

Landeskog’s return comes as his AHL conditioning loan with the American Hockey League has expired.

After recording 22 points in 20 playoff games, he missed the entire of the 2022-23 season following surgery on his right knee in October 2022. Landeskog then underwent cartilage transplant surgery on May 10, 2023, which resulted in him missing the 2023-24 season and all of the 2024-25 season to date. Last May, Landeskog shared an update for his return, but many felt skeptic rather or not he would play again.

Landeskog’s Return Comes at the Best Possible Time

Landeskog will be available for the Avalanche when they open the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. It is unclear what role the captain will play with the team. However, having their captain back will be a huge boost for a team looking to replicate their 2022 success. Since winning the Stanley Cup, the Avalanche have only won one playoff series.

The Avs will open the Stanley Cup Playoffs this weekend against the Dallas Stars. The Avs will start the series on the road, so Avalanche fans will have to wait a little longer to see their beloved captain.
