Swedish Native Headed to the Minnesota Wild

March 2, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

Gustav Nyquist will be playing for team he formerly played with after this trade. The native from Sweden has been traded from the Nashville Predators to the Minnesota Wild today. In return, the Predators receive a second-round draft pick in 2026. Also, Nashville retains 50% of his salary.

The 13-year veteran, an unrestricted free agent this summer, heads to his new team with nine goals and 12 assists on the season. Overall, Nyquist has recorded 524 points in his career. In addition to the Predators, Nyquist has also played for the Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and previously with the Minnesota Wild. His best season came last year with the Predators. In 81 games, Nyquist recorded 75 points.

In exchange for Nyquist, the Predators are acquiring a pick as mentioned.

Nyquist Looks to Bounce Back

The 2024-25 season has not been kind to the forward. This is a familiar trend for anyone associated with this season’s Predators, whose season has gone the complete opposite of what was expected. Despite the struggles, the Swede still brings a lot of talent to the Wild organization.

At 35-year old, we could be seeing Nyquist start to decline in productivity. However, on the right team. Nyquist can be an asset. He is still a strong skater. The issues that have plagued him in Nashville seems more to do with the overall struggles of the team.

Furthermore, Nyquist also brings playoff experience to the Wild. While has not played in a Stanley Cup Final, Nyquist helped the Sharks reach the Western Conference Final. A few years prior in 2013, the Red Wings were one win away from the Western Conference Final, but fell to finish off the Chicago Blackhawks despite leading the series 3-1.

A Big Push Could Lead to a Big Payday

If Nyquist can help Minnesota make a deep playoff run, that will help generate more suitors in the free-agent market. At 35-years old, this off-season could be the last chance he has at signing a significant contract. A big finish with the Wild can lead to a big payday.
