St. Louis Blues Extend Key Defensive Piece

January 11, 2026 by Last Word On Hockey

St. Louis has given an extension to one of their key defenceman. Prior to their game against the Vegas Golden Knights, the Blues announced they have signed Philip Broberg to a contract extension. The deal is for the next six years. The deal is worth $48 million, with an average annual value of $8 million. Furthermore, it will run him and the Blues through the 2031-32 season.

St. Louis Gives Philip Broberg A Contract Extension

Philip Broberg has been in the news since the moment he joined St. Louis. He and other former Edmonton Oiler Dylan Holloway were both signed as restricted free agents by Blues general manager Doug Armstrong. Those deals went down in the Summer of 2024. Since then, Broberg has 10 goals and 33 assists in 113 games for the Blues. A pretty impressive total for a depth defender.

The 24-year-old Sweden native also has 27 games of playoff experience. That includes a deeper Stanley Cup Playoff run with Edmonton in the 2023-24 season.

This extension for Broberg comes just days after being selected to Sweden’s nation team for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.

Why It Matters

The Central Division in the NHL continues to get better and better. Looking around at other teams, there are players like Cale Makar in Colorado and Quinn Hughes in Minnesota that are all around franchise defencemen. Doug Armstrong and future GM (and fellow Swede) Alex Steen thinks Broberg has this potential for St. Louis. While not looking very competitive this season, having Broberg for six-more years ensures he will be around when a rebuild/retool is completed.

Speculation could say that perhaps there are workings behind the scenes and the six-year deal was signed to be traded somewhere else. There is change coming to St. Louis, and it seems inevitable that key pieces are moved out. Having a player like Broberg signed for the next six seasons speaks volumes for the Blues. Management thinks he is a piece to the future. In addition, he is clearly for both of the Blues and the Swedish National Team. It also signals that perhaps some other established defencemen have a limited amount of time remaining. Either way, Broberg has shown he is deserving of stability in the National Hockey League.
