Sidney Crosby Moves Into Ninth All-Time on the NHL’s Scoring List

January 11, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

One of the all-time playing legends makes another historic chapter in his novel of his NHL career. The Pittsburgh Penguins long-time superstar centre Sidney Crosby has surpassed Joe Sakic for ninth on the all-time point list at 1642. He achieved the feat tonight, against none other than the Connor McDavid led Edmonton Oilers.

Sidney Crosby Now Has the Ninth Most Points in NHL History

Edmonton Oiler Star Achieves Milestone

Crosby has been one of the most consistent point producers of all time. That is remarkable having played through some low-scoring seasons with the goaltenders stealing the show. As an example, think back to the 2014-15 campaign, when Jamie Benn won the Art Ross Trophy with a mere 87 points. 87? Oh yeah, and for Sid, he has always been one of the faces of the league, even back to his rookie season.

That season, 2005-06, Crosby and the Great 8, Alex Ovechkin, battled it out for the rookie scoring title. Ovechkin, being two years his senior, and having professional experience, won it, but the two have had an intense rivalry ever since. It is helped fuel Crosby into his own personal scoring success. Seven times throughout Crosby’s career he has hit 60 assists or more, and he’s on pace to do it this year at age 37. He has won the Rocket Richard Trophy twice and eclipsed 50 once, the first time he captured the award. Needless to say, this is quite the feat, but what about the player he passes?

Joe Sakic Now Sits Tenth All-Time on the NHL’s Point List

‘Burnaby Joe’ was always a terrific player in the league and possessed a legendary wrister. No goalie in the league wanted him at the top of the circle off the rush. Twice Sakic hit the 50-goal mark and like Sid, seven times hit 60 assists. Six times he hit the century mark for points throughout his illustrious career.

Passing him is a truly enormous feat. Between the two, there’s five Stanley Cups. Naturally, the Kid who’s passing the retired Av great has the 3-2 edge. Both had significant success as respective members of best-on-best Team Canadas. You might recall the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics when Sid buried the Golden Goal versus the Team USA in overtime. He has been a champion his whole career and a truly great player besides. Furthermore, this milestone caps up quite the run of excellence this season already. He recently passed Patrice Bergeron as the league’s all-time leader in faceoff victories. Also, earlier in the campaign he hit 600 goals and passed Mario as the franchise’s most prolific assist gainer.
