San Jose Sharks Strike A Beneficial Deal With The Dallas Stars

February 2, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The San Jose Sharks and the Dallas Stars have secured a deal that will benefit both teams and their future success. The Sharks are sending star forward Mikael Granlund and defenceman Cody Ceci to Dallas. In return, they will get a first-round pick in this upcoming draft. However, that is not all that they will receive. The Sharks will get a conditional fourth-round pick, which could turn into a third if the Stars make the playoffs.

Granlund is the best offensive player the Sharks have had this season. The Sharks acquired him in the 2023 off-season from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Cody Ceci was acquired by the Sharks during the 2024 off-season from the Edmonton Oilers.

Both Ceci and Granlund are the top-value trade assets the Sharks have during this time of rebuild. Granlund has played in 52 games this season, getting 15 goals and 30 assists. He has also averaged 20:51 of ice time per game. He has been an instrumental part of the development of younger players such as William Eklund and Will Smith.

Ceci has played in 54 games and has four goals and 11 assists with an average time on the ice has been 21:46. He has impacted the team in positive ways, and he has been known for his great penalty kills and offensive contributions.

The Stars have had their fair share of injuries plaguing their team. They are currently down forward Tyler Seguin as he has undergone hip surgery. They are also missing defenceman Miro Heiskanen who is out with a knee injury. Adding Ceci and Granlund to the mix will help fill these spaces and help them push forward toward playoffs. Ceci also comes in with playoff experience that will benefit the Stars as they look to finish this season on a high note.

The Stars are second in the Central Division, right behind the Winnipeg Jets. They have a season record of 33-17-1 and are sitting sixth in the league. As playoffs approach they have a chance at making it in the Wild Card position.

The Sharks are in a much-needed rebuild, and receiving the draft picks for this upcoming June will be beneficial in growing their skill depth. The team is slowly moving to a younger roster with the intent to become successful and not at the bottom of the pile in the future.

The Sharks are sitting last in the Western Division and in the NHL with a disappointing record of 15-33-6. With the playoffs not happening this year, they can look forward and secure the players that they need.

Sharks Have Options In Growing Their Skills With Upcoming Draft

A few options are coming into the draft that can help the Sharks in their rebuild. Some prime players are entering the draft, such as Caleb Desnoyers who is a forward in the QMJHL. He has been known to be a well-rounded player with a strong power play as well as playing well offensively so that he doesn’t sacrifice defence. Victor Eklund is another forward who is quick to strike and is fast on his feet.

The Sharks have not alluded to who they have their eyes on yet in the draft, but the options are endless with the top selections.
