Buffalo Sabres Sign Alex Lyon

Last season with the Detroit Red Wings, Lyon posted a 14-9-1 record alongside a .896 save percentage and a 2.81 goals against average. Lyon’s GAA was his lowest since the 2017-18 season. However, it is worth noting that Lyon only played in 11 games that season, compared to the 30 he played in last season.

Increased Role in Detroit

After playing in just 39 games his first six seasons in the league, Lyon saw an increased role with the Red Wings. The Red Wings were in a tough spot with their goaltending due to ineffectiveness by Ville Husso. With Lyon, the Red Wings started playing competitive hockey again. In the 2023-24 season, the Wings remained in playoff contention until the last day of the regular season. Last season, the Wings entered the season as a dark-horse candidate to make the playoffs. While they ultimately missed the playoffs, they were in contention.

Will Increased Role and Experience Help Lyon With His New Team?

Lyon has spent the last two seasons helping the Red Wings return to contention. This could help Lyon with his new team. The 32-year old has shown he is a reliable goaltender in this league. He was not the only reason the Red Wings found themselves in contention, but to say he did not play a role at all would be incorrect.

The Sabres have not made the playoffs since the 2010-11 season. The team has certainly had stars on their team and do today, but have been unable to find a way to make the talent translate into a playoff berth. Lyon has experience on a contending team which will only help the Sabres as they look to get over the hump.
